ENA Courses: Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often
Zoom and Logistics
What platform do you use for the virtual course?
We use Zoom. We highly recommend downloading Zoom on a laptop or desktop computer and testing your audio and video before the course. The course is very difficult to take by phone or small tablet, so a desktop computer or laptop is best. Testing ahead of time helps you avoid problems on course day. Zoom technical support can take many days to respond, and our office cannot provide Zoom technical support. You can test Zoom here: https://zoom.us/test
How do I log in to attend the Zoom portion of the course?
Each participant must log in to Zoom separately, even when attending as a group. On the day of your course, log in to our website and click the Zoom link in your account to join.
I am attending with coworkers. Can we all log in from the same device?
No. Groups are welcome, but each participant must log in to Zoom separately. This is how attendance and breakout rooms are managed.
Practical and Written Exams
How do you perform the practical testing?
Practical testing is live over Zoom. A mock patient and equipment are displayed, and you receive a testing scenario. You guide the instructor through the assessment and the correct actions for that patient. You are scored objectively on your responses. The instructor cannot prompt you during testing. Most students do well because we practice in the online classroom from day one using the A-J mnemonic. The format is relaxed and friendly, and the practice scenarios are interactive, so most students feel prepared. Pre-study is still essential.
How do I take the written exam?
The written exam is online and taken after the live portion of the course. Once you pass the practical portion, ENA will send you the exam link. You have seven days to begin the exam. The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions, a two-hour time limit, two attempts, and an 80% passing score. Taking it outside the course lets you focus on the class and reduces exam stress.
Open-book exam: The exam is open-book, but it still requires study from the course, pre-course modules, textbooks, and practice stations.
Can I use my textbook for the written exam?
Yes. The exam is open-book, but the questions are carefully written by ENA and require you to understand the course concepts.
How long after the course do I have to take the exam?
You have seven days. Students who do not take the exam are marked incomplete (failed) by ENA.
Can you extend my time to take the written exam?
Unfortunately, no. ENA does not allow extensions. If you have questions about the exam or course modules, contact ENA at (800) 942-0011.
Two failed attempts: ENA does not allow another attempt without re-enrolling in another course.
Getting Your Card and Contact Hours
I am a travel nurse in a hurry. How soon can I start my exam and get my card?
You can start the exam as soon as you complete the practical testing. Your course director will enter your score into the ENA website. If you pass the station, you will be issued the written exam. Once you complete the course, your card will be available in your ENA account.
How do I receive my card?
After you successfully complete the course, your card is issued through ENA.org. You can access it online anytime in your account, so there is no waiting for a training center to send it.
How do I receive my contact hours?
Contact hours are issued directly through ENA.org after you complete the course. Log in to your account to print or reprint your contact hours certificates.
Experience and Course Fit
I'm a brand-new nurse. Can I take this course online via Zoom?
Yes. Keep in mind that this is an intense course, so plan to set aside ample time for study.
I have no ED experience. Can I take this course?
Yes. This course is an intense one, so plan ample study time. It is especially helpful for nurses who do not work in a major trauma center or pediatric ED. The program builds on basic concepts, and before long you will have developed a sound, structured assessment.
Do you offer other ENA programs?
Yes. We offer both popular ENA programs: TNCC and ENPC.
Pre-Course Modules and Textbooks
Do I need the textbook to start the pre-course modules?
No, you can start the modules without the textbook, but we recommend having it. ENA sometimes delays print or eBook delivery because of stock shortages. Please begin the online pre-course modules as soon as you have access, since they cover the core of the course (the A-J assessment).
I ordered a textbook, and it has not arrived. What can I do?
For an eBook, check your junk or spam folder for the email containing your eBook code and access link. For a print book, if the 21-day delivery window has passed, email support@HCTAUSA.org, and we will obtain tracking for you.
